Hurricane Harvey Relief

Houston is no stranger to fierce storms and hurricanes, but Harvey unleashed the worst flooding in Houston history, dumping roughly 29 inches of rain over two days, sending bayous over their banks and leaving neighborhoods across the Houston area deep in floodwaters. The Coast Guard and the Cajun Navy conducted dramatic rescues across the region, and canoes and kayaks were sold out in every REI and Academy across the city as neighbors pitched in the rescue effort. #HoustonStrong was on every business billboard and weekends were spent delivering tacos and ripping out moldy drywall with families who had to pause life to put their homes back in order. Creative agencies like the Black Sheep turned into makeshift relief centers and designers like myself designed shirts and other goods to raise funds for the long recovery effort. This one contributed $9,166.56 to the Mayor’s Harvey relief fund and I’m reminded of the scars—triumphs and shortcomings that they were—every time I wear it.
